This
James Lynah married Harriet Paullain of Georgia, but had no issue. His
education at the Charleston Military Academy was interrupted by the
Civil War. After serving with destinction in the Confederatacy he like
many others left the plantation. He became prominent in the coal mining
and shipping business in Baltimore in the firm of Lynah and Read which
he formed in 1890. He was described as fearless, upright in character,
firm in convictions, and of unswerving character. He was a devoted
southerner and a Democrat. Of striking personal appearance, he was
strong and well built with clear piercing dark eyes. He wore a mustache
but no other beard.
