ASHBY

John Ashby, a merchant of London, was a cadet of the family of Ashby of Quinby, and a descendent of the Lord of Manors of S. Croxton and Quinby, County of Leincester in 1297, This family was one of the original owners of the Baronies of S. C. and at one time owned several thousand acres of land in South Carolina.

One granddaughter, Catherine, of John Ashby married John Wigfall. The other, Elizabeth, married the Rev. Thomas Hasell. The children (first cousins) of these two marriages were married (Sarah Wigfall and Andrew Hasell), this being one of the many interfamily marriages that occurred in these times. Ella Louise Heyward is the great-grandchild of Sarah and Andrew Hasell.
