MIDDLETON
One
of South Carolina's most prominent families, the Middletons, were of
English origin and came to South Carolina early in the 17th century.
They had received large grants of land and owned many plantations.
Henry Middleton, father of Susanna Middleton, was perhaps the greatest
landholder in South Carolina, holding some 50,000 acres and 800 slaves.
He was prominent in church affairs, a delegate, and once president, to
the first Contential Congress, a member of the first Provincial
Congress. His son Henry was a signer of the Declaration of
Independence. His daughter Susanna married John Parker. Their daughter
Emma Angelina Parker married James Lynah (1793-1877).
